Tulane University Policy on Wireless Airspace

The wireless Ethernet airspace is a critical University resource that should be managed centrally to ensure a high-quality, secure wireless network that interacts optimally with the wired network. In addition, central management will enable the adoption of new features, such as seamless roaming between access points across subnets and higher bandwidth wireless Ethernet solutions based on the 802.11a standard.

    Consequently,

    • No access points are to be installed on the Tulane University network without the express permission of Technology Services (Call the Help Desk at 862-8888 for information).
    • Only access points approved by Technology Services are permitted on the Tulane University network. Currently, only access points produced by Enterasys networks are approved for use and we do not expect to approve other access points in the near future.
    • All access points are to be installed and configured by Technology Services personnel and must comply with all security features of the wireless network, including restrictions to provide connections only to those wireless Ethernet cards whose MAC address has been registered with Technology Services with authentication by the University authentication server.
    • The University reserves the right to remove any access point not installed or configured by Technology Services personnel.
    • Other devices such as portable phones and wireless devices using "Bluetooth" (a competing wireless technology) that broadcast and receive information on the same frequency as 802.11b-compliant devices may not be allowed on the network. If reports of disruptions caused by such devices occur, the circumstances will be investigated and could result in removal of the device.
